Arctica: circumpolar online mag seeks subs

(February 2010 update: Arctica is now set to launch on Friday, February 12, online and in a little studio in Whitehorse too, if you’re nearby)

Just before I moved to Dawson in April, a writer friend in Vancouver e-introduced me to an editor/writer in Whitehorse who was putting together an editorial team to plan an online magazine about Northern culture.

These few months later, Arctica Magazine is closer and closer to being out of our heads and into the world. The website has been purchased, editorial plans are under way and funding discussions are taking place.

Lily Gontard – formerly with North of Ordinary Magazine, among others – has been amazing in keeping the dozen or so of us on the editorial board focused and the magazine moving along. The result: Arctica’s first edition will be in December! February 2010!

Here’s the call for submissions:

From The Ice Cubicle’s perspective, I’m going to add: please send creative work about ice!

And please pass this call on to your friends in other circumpolar countries. Arctica’s goal is to develop a rich network of international contributors and readers, sharing – and enjoying – the creative energy that already exists in every culture north of 60.
